Rise of teenage sex choking blamed on porn – New York Times

Debby Herbenick of Indiana University is a leading researcher on American sexual behavior and she has been researching and tracking the unsettling rise of “rough sex” among college students over the last few years. Even more concerning is that the behavior has been found to emerge as early as 12. Free online porn has been flagged as the cause as what was once appalling becomes normalized in porn, moves to mainstream media and then shows up in the bedroom.

Peggy Orenstein, author of Boys & Sex and Girls & Sex outlined the concerning situation this past April in a guest essay in the New York Times entitled “The Troubling Trend in Teenage Sex”. This is worth a read as it explains how choking and strangulation moved from being almost completely unknown 20 years ago to now be a regular practice by so many teens and college students. Herbenick believes this may be why young people are having less sex. She told Orenstein, “Those are the only sexual experiences for some people. And it’s not just once they’ve gotten naked. They’ll say things like, “I’ve only tried to make out with someone once because he started choking and hitting me.’”

The challenge here is that we need to give young men the appropriate skills to replace the unrealistic skills and false ideas they likely picked up watching porn as a young boy and teen.  The Better Sex book can help parents educate their adult sons and fill in the gap between unrealistic porn and real sex. As Dr. Lori Brotto commented to the author: “Better Sex, Better Life, Better Man can help fill this gap by providing science-backed sex tips, giving the reader a more accurate understanding of what sex is really all about to make it a more pleasurable activity not just for him, but importantly also for his partner.”
